Time-of-Flight (TOF) residual distribution
The parameterization of the TOF distribution is obtained by studying a sample of soft pions from D* → D0 π decays.
The figure below shows the TOF residual distribution plotted under the pion mass hypothesis in which the pion peak is centered at zero.
Kaons and protons arrive later at the TOF detector as seen from the kaon/proton peaks in the distribution.
This difference in the arrival time is used to statistically separate the pion, kaon and proton components.
