Separation power of particle identification variables
We use two main particle identification techniques in the analysis, namely the measurement of the specific ionization per unit track length dE/dx in the Central Outer Tracker (COT) and the time of flight of the particle measured in the Time-of-Flight (TOF) sub-detector.
In general, the two techniques provide good separation power in complementary momentum regimes.
Hence, we use the TOF and dE/dx distributions in a combined likelihood fit to statistically separate kaons, pions and protons in the data sample.
